1888

The company was formed

De Beers Consolidated Mines established in South Africa

1893

Established Rooiport Nature Reserve

Now considered one of the oldest private game parks in South Africa.

1947

A Diamond is Forever

Female copywriter Frances Gerety wrote the iconic slogan- A Diamond is Forever 

1969

Established Debswana

Our 50/50 partnership with the Government of Botswana

1994

Established Namdeb

Our 50/50 partnership with the Government of Namibia

2001

Launched HIV and Aids Policy and Disease Management programme

One the world’s first workplace
 programme of its kind​

2002

Established the Diamond Route

A network of nature and cultural sites managed by De Beers to support biodiversity, conservation and education

2003

Founding partner of the Kimberley Process

Uniting governments, industry, and civil society to eliminate conflict diamonds to eliminate the trade in conflict diamonds

2013

Relocated Sales

Relocated De Beers’ Global Sales function from London to Botswana to create more jobs in producer countries​

2015

Established Namdeb- Debmarine Foundation

For social and community 
development in Namibia

2017

Launched partnership with UN Women

Supporting women’s empowerment within our business, our communities and through our marketing campaigns

2018

Launched Tracr

Our blockchain enabled digital traceability solution to provide provenance information for our diamonds

Moving Giants

Translocated 100 elephants through our Moving Giants programme from one of our nature reserves in South Africa, to Mozambique - helping to rewild Zinave National Park.

Established Gemfair

Supporting artisanal diamond miners to operate safely and create a fair and transparent route to market

Launched Building Forever

Our sustainability framework with ambitious 2030 goals

2021

Launched Okavango Eternal 

Our five year partnership with National Geographic to help protect the source waters of the Okavango Delta

Signed agreement with Envusa Energy

Enabling our mine in South Africa to source 100% renewable electricity by end of 2026​
